Phase One Restoration comes to a close. On June 28, 2018 the Gustav Stickley House Foundation and University Neighborhood Preservation Association hosted a celebration at the Columbus Avenue home marking the end of this phase. The occasion brought together numerous dignitaries as well as local organizations and community members for the occasion. Several people spoke at the event including Michael Lynch, Director of the Division of Historic Preservation of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, State Assemblywoman Pamela Hunter, State Senator David Valesky and Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh. Also in attendance were several Gustav Stickley descendants.
Preservation of the exterior was the focus of Phase One of the plan to save the house, which had fallen into disrepair over the years. A significant part of this phase was the reconstruction of the original front porch, which was removed over 50 years ago. Exterior work also included extensive repairs to the siding and trim; window restoration; structural stabilization; a new roof; asbestos abatement and painting the house with same colors that extensive research determined Stickley used on his home.
The celebration also provided an opportunity to recognize and thank the many local organizations and individuals who have supported the project thus far and recognize the work of project architects Crawford & Stearns and contractors CNY Building Services, Inc.
